Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels participated in the national 2012 March for Meals/Mayors for Meals campaign. The day began with a breakfast reception and meal delivery campaign on Wednesday, March 21 and concluded with a “Charit-a-Bull” fundraising event at Bullritos in Rosenberg. Breakfast for the event was generously donated by Bob’s Taco Station, McAlister’s Deli and MUGZ Coffee Bar and the coolers for the meal deliveries were donated by Silver Eagle Distributors.
“We believe that the March for Meals campaign was a success,” said Manuela Arroyos, CEO of Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels. “It was wonderful to see such a dynamic group of leaders in our community out serving meals to our seniors and spreading the word about our program. Not only did this program raise awareness of senior hunger in our community, it brought in a number of new possible volunteers as well.”
This year, 43 elected officials, community leaders, candidates and Fort Bend Seniors representatives from Fort Bend County and surrounding cities, including Rosenberg, Richmond, Sugar Land, Village of Pleak, Missouri City and Kendleton, delivered over 60 meals on behalf of Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels.
Donations to Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels from these leaders totaled over $1,200.
In conjunction with the March for Meals/Mayors for Meals campaign, Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels held a “Charit-a-bull” event with Bullritos in Rosenberg. For every event flyer that was presented on Wednesday, Bullritos donated 20 percent of the check total. Bullritos presented a check for $44 to help fight senior hunger in Fort Bend County.
“Our Meals On Wheels programs are on the front lines every day in the battle against senior hunger,” said MOWAA President and CEO Enid Borden. “March for Meals is a time when communities can come together to stand with their local Meals On Wheels and support our mission to end senior hunger in America by the year 2020.”
Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels, in conjunction with the March for Meals campaign, has been awarded over $8,000 in grants and recognized nationally by MOWAA for their commitment to raise awareness about “Senior Hunger”.
