Sugar Land Skeeters and First Victoria Bank have teamed up with Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels to help alleviate senior hunger in Fort Bend County through the Brown Bag Project. The Brown Bag Project a county-wide effort to encourage the students in Lamar CISD, along with the businesses in Fort Bend to take their lunch to school or work and donate their “lunch money” to help feed a senior adult in need of a hot daily meal.

“It costs $7 a day to feed a homebound senior adult in need of a meal,” says Manuela Arroyos, Chief Executive Officer at Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels. “According to a survey by the finance recruiting firm, Accounting Principals, 50 percent of the American work force spends an average of $2,000 a year on the midday meal1 (approximately $8 per day). By taking your lunch for one week and donating your “lunch money”, you will make a significant impact in helping our organization fulfill our goal of serving over 275,000 meals in 2012.”

Lamar Consolidated Independent School District students have also been asked to take part in this initiative to help feed the homebound senior adults through the distribution of flyers in weekly take-home folders. The Sugar Land Skeeters Mascot will visit the top fundraising school in the District and the top fundraising student in the District will win a special package from the Skeeters, which will include tickets to a game in the 2013 season.

“The Sugar Land Skeeters are excited to be on board with Fort Bend Seniors and local school districts this year to help support this worthy cause,” said Taylor McFarland, Communications Relations Manager for the Sugar Land Skeeters. “We feel this program will be beneficial for all parties involved. We love that it gets the kids involved and motivated to help others!”
