Sivateja Tangirala wins for second time
Sivateja Tangirala , an 8th grader at Fort Settlement Middle School in Fort Bend ISD, won the 2012 HoustonPBS Spelling Bee by spelling the winning word – “catalineta.” Tangirala, who was also the 2011 HoustonPBS Spelling Bee champion, now advances to the Scripps National Spelling Bee, the prestigious climax for the nation’s best spellers, after a tough marathon competition with 55 spellers from 42 counties in the HoustonPBS Bee televised live for over 5 hours on Channel 8, Saturday, March 31, 2012.
“I feel really great to win again,” explained Sivateja Tangirala. “But there were some really great competitors. I just got lucky.” On his thoughts about moving to the Scripps National Bee finals, Tangirala said, “I will take it one round at a time.”
With the victory in the HoustonPBS Spelling Bee, Tangirala wins all-expenses-paid trip for two to Washington, D.C. He has the distinction of spelling for the Southeast Texas region at the Scripps National Spelling Bee during Bee Week from May 29 – June 2, 2012. He will face 277 contestant spellers from across the country, aiming for victory and prizes worth more than $40,000.
