Jonny Nguyen’s last name is pronounced “win.”
And, that is what he recently accomplished at the State Wrestling Tournament.
Wrestling at 120 lbs., he finished the season with a record of 32 wins against two losses. Nguyen won both the District and Regional championships in his class on the way to the state tournament in Austin. Only 16 wrestlers in each weight class advance to the state tournament.
A senior, this is the second year that Nguyen has been wrestling for Foster. He also wrestled for eight years in Iowa.
Nguyen said that when he didn’t make the state tournament in 2012, he “put his heart into the mat,” training before and after practice, sometimes wrestling eight hours a day.
“I have to thank Coach (Jeff) Rayome,” Nguyen said. “He pushed me further than I thought I could go.”
Rayome said that Nguyen’s dedication is what set him apart.
“He is an all-year wrestler,” Rayome said. “Every day he wrote the same thing in his journal: Be State Champion. It is that focus that sets him apart.”
