Martinez, Castro, Bell and Liriano to represent Sugar Land
The Sugar Land Skeeters announced Friday the selection of four team members to the 15th annual Atlantic League All-Star Game held at Campbell’s Field in Camden, New Jersey. Octavio Martinez, Ofilio Castro, Bubba Bell, and Pedro Liriano were selected as All-Star participants to represent the Skeeters for the first time in franchise history.
The selections were made based on fan voting, as well as media votes and manager votes from each of the league’s eight teams. This is the first mid-summer classic for each player.
Martinez, a California native from Los Angeles, currently holds the ninth best batting average in the Atlantic League (.316) with 54 hits in 171 at-bats. The starting catcher has accumulated eight doubles, 16 RBIs and 18 runs scored while playing in 49 games as the backstop for Manager Gary Gaetti.
Castro, a Nicaraguan from Managua, made his impact with the Skeeters after joining the team 14 games into the season when the team hosted the Long Island Ducks 10 days into May. The starting third baseman has retained a .301 batting average in 186 plate appearances with 10 doubles, two triples and two home runs picking up 24 RBIs in 51 games played. Castro became the first player in franchise history to hit a walk-off RBI-single in the bottom of the ninth and a grand slam all in the same home stand.
Houston native and current resident, Bell, ranks as one of the top center fielders in the league defensively through the first half of the season. The commander in the outfield raised his batting average almost 40 full points over the last three weeks to .285 while tallying the second most doubles in the league (20) and second most triples (3) in over 242 at-bats. Bell also has one of the best stolen base
percentages among base runners having only been caught once in seven attempts.
Liriano, a former major leaguer from the Dominican, carries one of the best ERA’s for a pitcher into the midway point as both a starter and reliever for Sugar Land. The Dominican has a 2.59 ERA in four starts and 13 appearances while working 41.2 innings. The right handed pitcher has struck out 25 batters while walking just 16 with opponents batting a miniscule .238 against.
Leading the Freedom Division is York Revolution Manager Andy Etchebarren. Rounding out the Freedom’s coaching staff is Pitching Coach Mark Mason, Coach Enohel Polanco and Player Coach Liu Rodriguez.
The Liberty Division will be managed by Long Island Duck’s Manager Kevin Baez. Joining Baez are his Long Island staff, including Pitching Coach Steve Foucault and coaches Jay Loviglio and Buddy Harrelson.
