Fort Bend County Libraries will feature free Family Movie Matinees for the Winter Break at the University Branch Library, 14010 University Blvd in Sugar Land, on the UH campus, in December.
The special feature on Monday, December 23, is an Academy Award-winning children’s movie from 1995. It was the first feature-length computer-animated film ever made. The movie features the voices of Tom Hanks as “Woody” and Tim Allen as “Buzz Lightyear.” Woody, a draw-string cowboy doll, is jealous of the new-toy-in-town, a spaceman action figure named Buzz Lightyear. When they find themselves in the outside world, Woody and Buzz must band together to survive and find their way home again. This film is rated G. Showtime is 1:30 pm, in the Large Meeting Room of the library.
On Saturday, December 28, families will be treated to a 1996 remake of a cartoon classic. Dalmatians Perdita and Pongo are the proud parents of a bundle of puppies that are kidnapped by an evil woman who wants to make a coat with their fur. Enlisting the help of the British animal kingdom, Pongo and Perdita set out to find and rescue all ninety-nine pups from their fearsome captors. This movie is rated G. Showtime is 10:30 am, in the Large Meeting Room of the library.
On Tuesday, December 31, enjoy an Oscar-winning animated adventure drama about a lion prince named Simba, who is tricked into thinking that he killed his father. The guilt-ridden cub flees into exile and abandons his identity as the future king. After years of exile, Simba grows to adulthood and is persuaded by his childhood friend, Nala, to return home to overthrow his evil uncle, Scar, and claim the kingdom as his own, thus completing the “Circle of Life.” This movie is rated G. Showtime is 10:30 am, in the Large Meeting Room of the library.
The final movie of the winter break will be shown on Thursday, January 2. This remake of a children’s classic is about a young street urchin who accidentally meets and falls in love with a princess, who is in the city in disguise. The sultan’s evil advisor, who is plotting to rule the land with the aid of a mysterious lamp, throws the boy in jail to prevent him from interfering with the overthrow of the kingdom. Legend has it that only a person who is a “diamond in the rough” can retrieve the lamp from the Cave of Wonders. The boy might meet that description, but that’s not enough to marry the princess, who must (by law) marry a prince. This movie is rated G. Showtime is 10:30 am, in the Large Meeting Room of the library.
The movies are free and open to the public. Movie-goers are invited to bring a blanket and pillow. Refreshments will be available. For more information about the featured movies, call the branch library at 281-633-5100 or the library’s Public Information Office at 281-341-2677.
