Twenty-six members of Garcia Middle School’s Male Mentors organization recently braved 30 degree temperatures to collect canned and boxed food items from community members. The group partnered with Kroger’s, at Highway 6 and West Airport, to host their 3rd annual Male Mentor Food Drive.
Accompanied by club sponsors, the students devoted four hours to the event, and in the end collected 463 pounds of food and received more than $180 in donations, which were used to purchase canned meats. Students also enjoyed Texas-style southern hospitality from community members as they presented students with complimentary donuts, orange juice and hot chocolate.
The amount of food items collected from the food drive, combined with donations from students and staff at Garcia, resulted in more than 600 pounds of food being collected to support families in need. To reward students for their efforts, those donating the most food items will have the opportunity to attend a Houston Rockets basketball game in January.
