Journey back through 100 years of holiday traditions at the George Ranch Historical Park this December with Campfire Christmas celebrations on December 13, 14, 20 & 21 and a Children’s Campfire Christmas on December 19.
“Campfire Christmas gives our visitors the rare opportunity to enjoy the beauty and serenity of the Park at night as we take them back in time to see how today’s Christmas traditions were developed by our ancestors,” said Krystal Willeby, Director of Programs.
The evening will begin at 6 p.m. in the 1930s with an old-fashioned barn dance and holiday meal, where guests will enjoy the sounds of classic cowboy music. Dinner will be served until 8:30 p.m. to allow guests the option of eating before or after their scheduled tram time.
The adventure kicks off with a visit to the Davis Mansion, where guests will explore the splendor of Victorian Christmas in 1891. A special tour of the home will feature vignettes of the typical holiday for the Davis family.
The next stop is the 1875 cattle drive at the Chuckwagon site, where guests are invited to sit a spell and sing carols around the campfire. Learn what Christmas was like for the cowboys on the trail bringing the cattle up north for the upcoming Centennial Exposition.
The evening concludes at the Jones Stock Farm at Christmas Eve 1844, when the Republic of Texas was preparing for statehood.
“In addition to the regular Campfire Christmas nights, we also host a special children’s edition that is more geared toward families with younger kids,” said Susan Rezeppa, Educational Coordinator.
Children’s Campfire Christmas, beginning at 6 p.m. on December 19, will feature a light dinner, Christmas Crafts, and an appearance by Santa. Families are invited to take a hay ride through the Park and sing Christmas songs around the campfire with the cowboys.
