The Touchdown Club of Houston awarded George Ranch High School a Special Achievement Award during its annual Sportsmanship Luncheon, Wednesday at the J.W. Mariott.
Terry High School was third out of 14 finalists for the 4A Sportsmanship Award, Lamar Consolidated High School was also nominated. “I am extremely proud of these teams,” said Lamar CISD Athletics Director Mike Rice. “When an outside group like the officials association recognizes you, it’s an honor.”
“What really makes it neat is that it isn’t just the team, but parents, band, cheerleaders, the entire atmosphere that a school projects during the game,” he said. ‘’That’s what makes it special.”
Because George Ranch does not play varsity football until the coming season, the school was ineligible for a regular award. The Texas Association of Sports Officials designated GRHS for the award based on the sportsmanship shown in the face of adverse conditions.
George Ranch Coach Trevor White passed away in the spring of 2011 and his replacement, Ricky Tullos, was hired shortly before the season started.
“While I was up there receiving the award, it really goes all of George Ranch High School, the administrators, the kids, the coaches,” said GRHS Football Coach and Campus Athletics Coordinator Ricky Tullos. “They deserve to be recognized for the job they did in the most difficult of circumstances.”
“Hopefully we’re doing things the right way at Terry by teaching sportsmanship, class and integrity,” said Terry High Football Coach and Campus Athletics Coordinator Tim Tekyl. “We’re by no means perfect, but it’s good to see recognition by those who watch football.”
“We’re honored and we thank the Touchdown Club, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and TASO for this award,” Tekyl continued. “It’s a proud moment and I was proud to see our table gleam.”
Terry High will be the home of the trophy until it is passed on at next year’s banquet.
Finalists and winners are chosen based on three criteria:
- Actions of the team and coaches at the games;
- Actions of the support groups at the games, including parents, band, cheerleaders and pep squad; and
- Respect for the American flag.
