The idea of making New Year’s resolutions came about thousands of years ago. According to an article featured on teenkidsnews.com, the tradition originates from the ancient Babylonians when they begin their year by promising the gods to return items borrowed and pay accumulated debts. Similarly, the students at Wertheimer Middle School are encouraged to establish some goals as well to address personal and academic improvement.
As one of our first assignments when we returned from Winter Break, every student was asked to submit one personal and two academic goals that they would work to achieve during the coming year. Our principal, Mrs. Irma Nurre, requested that every student also include how he or she planned to achieve each of the goals. I had the chance to ask Mrs. Nurre about the reason for this assignment and she told me, “I think it is important to get the students to do this. It sometimes helps them to accomplish their goals.”
I also had the opportunity to talk to some fellow students at lunch about how they feel about making and achieving their 2013 goals. I was given some good insight on this from my classmate Trevor Zahn. “I usually make about two to three major goals a year [and manage to] keep one or two of them.” He went on to tell me that one of his academic goals this year is to maintain his straight A’s and that another personal goal was to improve in Taekwondo.
Classmate, Ethan Sykes, agrees with Mrs. Nurre on the importance of setting goals, and told me that he feels that his New Year’s resolutions allow him to “set up and get ready for the future and what [he] wants to accomplish” this year. One of Ethan’s goals is to “better remember his homework” by improving his organization. Ethan also goes on to admit that while he is not always able to achieve every goal, he remains hopeful.
All of us here at Wertheimer are making resolutions in hopes of improving both academically and personally. I encourage everyone to join us in setting goals this year for a fantastic 2013!
