Hey runners & all chili cooks! Mark your calendars! The Grant-A-Starr Foundation 4th annual 5K race and 1 mile Family Fun Run is scheduled for Saturday, March 24, 2012 at Sugar Land Memorial Park, 15300 University Blvd., Sugar Land, TX. The Family Fun Run begins at 9:00 AM and the 5K race, which is certified by USATF, starts at 9:30 AM.
Associated activities include food, beverages, music and a Kid’s Zone.
Following the Race, the Foundation is hosting the first ever GASF Chili Cook-Off. The cook-off event will be sanctioned and guided by CASI (Chili Appreciation Society International) regulations and will include a bean competition (turn-in at 11:00 AM) as well as the chili competition (turn-in at 1:00 PM). It is an open event and interested cooks as well as seasoned competitors are encouraged to participate. Cook-off registration will be at the Park the morning of the event.
The Grant-A-Starr Foundation was founded in the celebration of the life of Grant Starr and is a non-profit organization created solely for the purpose of advancing early diagnostic testing to save children’s lives. Proceeds of the GASF Race & Chili Cook-Off provide ongoing financial support for research programs at Texas Children’s Hospital and Children’s Memorial Herman Hospital.
What makes the GASF Race & Fun unique is the student steering committee. It is made up of local area high school volunteers who have taken a deep personal interest in the cause and the race. Committee chairperson Paige Lambert, a senior at Clements High School, is setting aggressive goals for the 2012 event. “Many of us knew Grant and want to keep his memory alive by making each race bigger and better than the one before. We are working hard to make the 2012 run and now our chili cook-off huge successes.”
