It has been brewing for years; if I were a betting person I would bet there is actually an open line in Vegas for the 2012 Fort Bend County Sheriff’s race.
This race started less than a month after Sheriff Milton Wright took office for his current term on January 1, 2009. If memory serves correctly, it all started at a political breakfast thrown by Commissioner Precinct 3 Andy Meyers in late January of 2009.
At that breakfast the sheriff stood up and announced that his chief deputy would be running for his position in the upcoming election of 2012. The crowd was slack jawed; the topic buzzed for hours, until… the sheriff and his chief deputy called a meeting that afternoon over at the jail and handed out $1,000 checks to all the law enforcement personnel in the Patrol and Detectives Divisions. Wow! Checks from an anonymous donor, you know.
Folks all across Texas are still scratching their heads over that one. Doesn’t the law say something about gratuities, gifts? Nah, no one here in good ole’ boy Fort Bend County has the guts to enforce that, only the Sheriff knew who gave that money and he would never tell and would provide safe haven for the donor. However, when you look at the political contributions over the years on the chief deputy‘s contribution reports, Bev was right way back then. Those poor employees have had to give most, if not all of that money back, to the Chief’s campaign that is.
2012 will bring change in the sheriff’s office, but just what kind of change remains to be seen. However, if the fit throwing, verbal attacks, and the inability to follow rules at last week’s sheriff’s candidate forum in Sugar Land are any indication of how the chief deputy is going to campaign or act if elected, it is just plain ugly. Not to mention in poor taste.
From what we are hearing from employees and those close to the sheriff’s office, this kind of behavior is just the tip of the iceberg. Go see for yourself and remember, he is carrying a gun and can take away your liberty, all over “grin’n like a opossum?” Really?

*Editors Note from Bev Carter: Back in 2009, interestingly enough, not the County Attorney, the District Attorney, nor any other official right here in BubbaLand had the nerve to call the sheriff on this “anonymous” donation. A sheriff and chief deputy, who coincidentally, had been letting a wealthy convicted felon have privileges at the jail since his daughter was re-arrested.
