Thirteen GT Academy students and one Academy alumni presented poetry during a recent poetry reading hosted by Rice University. The students were selected to take part in the event after submitting poetry they wrote based on their experience at the university’s “Words & Art” event, held at the Marshland by Gaia Exhibit, which featured floor to ceiling images depicting Houston’s urban change and development created by Baltimore street artist, Gaia.
More than 70 GT Academy students and their families visited the art exhibit and submitted writing inspired by their experiences. The poetry submissions, which included student and adult entries, went through a blind selection process conducted by event organizers. In the end, the following GT Academy students were selected to present their written works of art: Hannah Abraham, Catalina Chang, Ethan Chow, Leo Dong, Siddharth Khurana, Sairaja Kurelli, Dylan Sky MacAdams, Satwik Misra, Mehul Mittal, Kedar Pandya, Anya Pazhoor, Colby Sanders, Kanika Talwar, and Joyce Chen (current Elkins High School student and GT Academy alumni). The GT Academy students are taught by GT English Language Arts teachers Joe Bernhart, Nicole Frazier and David Sebek.
Frazier joined Abigail Priest, GT Academy Coordinator, in attending the poetry reading to support the students. “We were amazed by the talent of our young poets,” said Frazier. “To say that we were proud of all of the students who participated and submitted poetry is an understatement.”
