The Hightower Hurricanes claimed second place in the 32-team Fort Bend ISD Varsity Girls Basketball Tournament held last week.
Ridge Point beat Langham Creek 67-61 to take third place.
Atascocita shot 42 percent from the field in the fourth quarter to Hightower’s 20 percent to win the championship game. The game was tied at 15 after the first quarter, as Destini Lombard had eight points to lead the Hurricane. Lombard added seven more points in the second quarter, as the Hurricane’s led 35-34 at halftime.
But the Hurricanes went cold in the third quarter. After shooting 56 percent in the second quarter, they could only make 23 percent in the third quarter, and Atascocita took a 50-42 lead.
In the fourth quarter, Hightower continually drove to the basket, but they could not get their shots to fall, as they only made 4 of 20 attempts.
Lombard finished the game with 20 points, and Taelor Purvis added 14. Lombard and Aresa Gipson were voted to the all-tournament team.
Hightower is 7-2 and they will play Cypress Falls on Nov. 20, Clear Creek on Nov. 27, and Langham Creek on Dec. 8, before opening the District 20-6A season with Austin on Dec. 12.
