The Texas Dragon Boat Association (TDBA) is pleased to announce the Honorary Co-Chairs of the 9th Annual Gulf Coast International Dragon Boat Regatta taking place on October 20-21, 2012. The distinguished Honorary Co-Chairs include: The Honorable Vincent M. Morales Jr., Mayor, City of Rosenberg; The Honorable Li Guixi, Deputy Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Houston; Hillary Goldstein, Board President, First Colony Community Association; and Ronald A. DePinho, M.D., President, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Teams from California, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Texas – including corporate, community, youth and breast cancer survivor (BCS) teams – will paddle 40-foot long dragon boats weighing 500 pounds in the waters of Brooks Lake in Sugar Land, Texas. “Dragon boating is a great wellness activity with cultural significance and has been embraced by breast cancer survivors all across the United States”, said Dr. DePinho. “MD Anderson is pleased to support the Regatta.”
The Regatta highlights the traditions and cultures of Asia and Asian-Americans. “Dragon boats represent an important cultural tradition in China dating to 278 B.C., and I commend the Texas Dragon Boat Association for sharing this tradition in the United States,” said Deputy Consul General Li.
