Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels’ (FBS) announced that Houston Endowment has awarded the organization $120,000 to assist in providing meals and services to the senior citizens in Fort Bend County.
“The population is rapidly aging and with rising food and fuel prices, low interest rates on savings and retirement accounts, our elderly are really struggling to make ends meet. With Fort Bend Seniors providing daily meals, this allows their social security checks to stretch further, it also helps divert homelessness. The demand for meals and services is continuing to grow daily and the funds from Houston Endowment will go a long way in meeting that demand,” Manuela Arroyos said.
The funding is a two-year grant, with Fort Bend Seniors receiving $60,000 in 2011 and $60,000 in 2012.
Fort Bend Seniors provides services for over 1,400 seniors daily. The cost of a daily hot meal which helps keep the seniors healthy is very small compared to the cost of a 24/7 nursing home, according to Arroyos.
“Again, we can not thank Houston Endowment enough for making it possible for Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels to meet the growing needs of the seniors in our communities. Thank you Houston Endowment,” Arroyos said.
