The Hubenak Elementary Choir will perform a free concert February 7 at 7 p.m. in Rogers Auditorium at Foster High School. This is the Choir’s last warm-up concert before the group sings February 9 at the Texas Music Educators Association Clinic and Convention in San Antonio.
Angela Ramsey directs the Hubenak Choir. Hubenak is one of only seven elementary schools invited to sing at this year’s conference.
“The remarkable thing about the Hubenak Choir is that they are the only un-auditioned choir to be selected for this high honor from all the schools around the state,” said Ramiro Estrada, Lamar CISD’s Director of Fine Arts. “That means there’s kind of an open-admissions policy for the choir. I think that speaks volumes about Mrs. Ramsey’s abilities as a teacher.”
“This is the first time a Lamar CISD musical ensemble has been selected to perform at TMEA,” Estrada said. “Being selected to perform at the state music educators convention is the musical equivalent of a state championship in athletics.”
Seven other Lamar CISD students will perform at this year’s convention. Choir students Chika Iguh and David Roorda from Lamar CHS, Terry’s Carolyn Castillo and Eric Gonzales and Foster High School’s Alayna Thomas will all perform in San Antonio. Iguh is a four-time All-State selection, while Castillo and Thomas have made All-State three times.
George Ranch High oboist Elise Lasker is that school’s first All-State selection. She will perform in San Antonio as well.
