From June 12-17th, while most High School Students where sleeping in during their second week of summer break, 19 cadets from the Air Force JROTC program in Kempner High School spent a week of rigorous leadership training at Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas.
Eight senior and 11 Junior cadets traveled six hours north to attend Cadet Command and Staff School (CCSS) and Cadet Summer Leadership School (CSLS) to prepare them as Group leaders for the coming school year. Cadets began their day at 5:00A.M with daily physical training, followed by precision drill practice, meticulous personal and dormitory inspections, and finally classroom instruction covering leadership, conflict resolution, and corps management.
Eight Kempner cadets were recognized as Distinguished Graduates – 5 at CCSS and 3 at CSLS. CCSS DGs were: Kevin Clink (Honor Grad), Andre Russell, Perla Benavides, Wasim Ali, and Christian DeMora. CSLS DGs were: Adam Celia, Karla Torres, and Francesca Trejos. Although not technically a Distinguished Graduate, Leighanne Rivera finished 17th out of 172 students to place in the top 10%. All the cadets gave outstanding efforts and will be valuable leaders throughout the upcoming school year.
