Cadet Master Sergeant Marcus Levine was one of the one hundred plus graduates present at the USAF Civil Air Patrol’s Honor Guard Academy graduation ceremony in Westminster, MD, on Saturday, July 21, 2012. C/MSgt Levine is a member of Texas Sugar Land Composite Squadron 360. The Squadron meets weekly at Sugar Land Regional Airport.
Meticulously groomed, crisp detailed uniforms, white gloves and ascot, the cadets stepped up and out to demonstrate what they learned for those attending graduation. From sharing the history of our nation’s flag, carrying a flag- draped casket, and then folding the flag for presentation to a recipient, and the exciting basic, intermediate and advanced rifle drills, each cadet represented a proud history and future.
The Academy’s mission is to produce the finest honor guardsman in Civil Air Patrol, equipping cadets to serve their communities and work for a drug-free America. It accomplishes this through the rigors of a two week segment that has a cumulative effect via a standardized curriculum that promotes the highest ideals of leadership, patriotism, and respect for the United States.
Centering on general education and the four honor guard elements, each section consists of classroom and hands-on instruction; include training by members of the United States Air Force’s official ceremonial unit.
The ceremonial, demonstration, element classes covered a broad range of topics, including wreath-laying and change of command ceremonies, distinguished visitor escorting, and the manual of arms. Colors element classes focused on the carry, display, history, and traditions of the flag of United States of America (and others), whereas the funeral element classes prepare cadets to render appropriate honors to those who have served in the Civil Air Patrol.
Finally, drug demand reduction element classes prepare cadets to be leaders in their units and communities, as well as educate other members concerning the hazards and dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.
C/MSgt Levine said, “I can say safely say that my two weeks at the Honor Guard Academy were not only the most stressful and challenging time of my life, but it was also the most rewarding as well.”.
C/MSgt. Levine , the son of Joel and Julie Levine of Missouri City, is a Junior a Elkins High School where he participates in the AFJROTC and Varsity Choir.
