According to testimony, both White and Delauder had been drinking that night with friends at separate locations. “White returned home first and watched television in bed. Delauder arrived later and began calling out to White, who ignored him. When she finally looked up, Delauder was standing in the doorway of the bedroom holding a 12 gauge shotgun. Delauder then shot White in the back stating, “you will see how demonic I am!” said Stotts. After being shot, White fled the home, crawled under a fence, and walked to a nearby gas station where she called 911. White was able to describe the home, the car that the defendant drove and tell authorities his name was “Donald” before going into shock.

Sheriff’s deputies located Donald Delauder asleep in a chair in the house. Stotts said, “Evidence presented at trial revealed that authorities found blood on the bed and the shotgun at the foot of the chair where Delauder was sleeping.” The victim was treated at a hospital and today still has shotgun pellets lodged in her upper torso.

Delauder’s defense was that he has had a brain injury and frequent alcohol-related blackouts caused by years of intoxication. Delauder claimed he did not remember the night of the shooting.
