The Sugar Land Skeeters announced that Atlantic League All-Star and Skeeters starting pitcher Matt Wright has signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks organization and will report to its Triple A Reno Aces club. The announcement was made by Skeeters Manager Gary Gaetti and Director of Operations Michael Kirk.
Wright, 31, posted a 10-1 record with a 2.63 ERA (27ER/92.1IP) in 15 starts for Sugar Land this season. He led the Atlantic League in wins (10) and ERA (2.63) and ranked fourth with 68 strikeouts on the year. Wright also holds the honor of being the only Opening Day starter in Skeeters franchise history (2012-13).
A native of Robinson, Texas, Wright was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 21st round of the June 2000 Draft out of Robinson High School. Over 14 minor league seasons, the right-hander owns an 88-83 record with a 3.87 ERA (623ER/1,450.1IP) and 1,246 strikeouts in 280 career appearances (244 starts).
Wright is now the seventh member of Sugar Land’s 2013 club and 17th overall to be signed by a Major League organization since Opening Day 2012.
