Meadows Elementary School Students can expect another exciting year in Library Services

August 1, 2012 by FortBendStar

Shelly Puckett, librarian at Meadows Elementary School, is planning another exciting year in reading for students at her school. In addition to hosting bi-annual book fairs, author visits, and literacy programs, she will continue to sponsor the school’s Texas Readers Club and “Boys Only” Book Club.

“I am passionate about doing all I can to inspire young ones to read,” said Puckett. “My goal is to make the library a literacy driving force at Meadows and not just a supplemental resource.”

Puckett will continue to encourage students to utilize online resources, such as Tumblebooks, at home to hone their reading skills. She also plans to host author visits to introduce students to actual writers who can also inspire them to become lifelong readers.

Last year, Puckett hosted a visit from author Tim Green, a former NFL football player and college football Hall of Famer. She promoted the visit throughout the school year as a reward and incentive for Meadows students to complete their Texas Readers Club requirements. Green visited Meadows in the spring to commend students on meeting their reading requirements. He spoke to students about the importance of strong academics and good character in addition to athletic determination.

Prior to his scheduled visit, Green made a surprise visit to members of the “Boys Only” Book Club, who had read copies of Green’s book, Football Genius, during the school year. Meeting Green was an experience the boys will not forget.
