Maria Rillera, RN, is Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s DAISY Award winner, a national honor that recognizes the contributions of extraordinary nurses.
Maria was chosen because she has demonstrated the highest degree of compassion for her patients. She brings a soft touch to the patients in the ICU and never forgets that each patient is an individual with a history and a lifetime full of family, friends and experiences.
Not only does Maria show exceptional compassion to her patients, she has spearheaded fund raising events for fellow nurses in times of need. For example, Maria held a fundraiser to raise money for a fellow nurse who was battling breast cancer. She frequently visited and prayed with this nurse and provided emotional support for her colleague’s husband and daughter. Currently, she is leading “Cube of Love” – an initiative in which she shares stories with her colleagues. These stories often share the same theme which is the importance in our every action. She reminds her fellow nurses that one does not have to “save the world” to make a difference; the world is often changed one kind word at a time.
“Maria embodies the values we strive for,” said Janet Leatherwood, Chief Nursing Officer of Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “She is a constant example of a nurse who is truly passionate about being a nurse and helping others.”
In honor of her DAISY Award selection, Maria received a certification of appreciation, a DAISY Award pin and a beautiful sculpture titled “A Healer’s Touch,” hand-carved by artists of the Shona tribe in Zimbabwe. Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s Nursing Administration group will select a DAISY Award winner each quarter.
The DAISY Foundation was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died in 1999 from an auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses inspired this unique award as a way of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families. Today, more than 1,300 hospitals across the U.S. participate in the program.
“We are proud to be among the hospitals participating in the DAISY Award program,” said Leatherwood. “Nurses like Maria are everyday heroes who demonstrate excellence through clinical expertise and compassionate care, and we are excited to be able to recognize her – and our future winners – as outstanding role models for the nursing profession.”
