In recognition of National Poetry Month in April, Fort Bend County Libraries’ Missouri City Branch Library, 1530 Texas Parkway, will present programs celebrating poetry and the contributions made by poets to the world of literature.
A “Chocolate for Poetry” contest will take place April 1-24. Original poems may be submitted by participants aged 14 and up. For each entry, the participant will receive a piece of chocolate. The winner will be announced on April 28, and will receive a chocolate prize. Poems must not contain any explicit language or profanity.
A Poetry T-Shirt Contest for high school students will also take place April 1-24. Teens will decorate their own t-shirts with designs representing their favorite poems or poets. All entries must be received by April 24, and the winner will be announced on April 28. The winning entry will receive a gift card. T-shirts must not have any profanity or explicit images on them. All entries must have the entrant’s name, phone number and email address attached, and must be picked up from the library within 14 days after the contest ends.
A Poetry Slam for high school students will take place on Saturday, April 14, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm, in the Meeting Room of the library. Local high school students are invited to compete in the event by reading original works they have created themselves. Prizes will be awarded to the top three contestants.
The events are free and open to the public. For more information, call the branch library at 281-238-2100.
