Effective Feb. 1, Missouri City Council Members have authorized Republic Services to be the exclusive solid waste provider for all commercial customers located within City limits.
Republic representatives are meeting with business owners and managers to communicate the news and will match companies’ current rates. “The goal is to ensure our businesses receive excellent solid waste service at a competitive cost,” said Assistant City Manager Bill Atkinson.
A difference in rates this year will be the assessment of a 5 percent solid waste franchise fee, which was approved last year by City Council. The fee is being charged to all commercial and residential customers, and is estimated to generate $250,667 in revenues for Fiscal Year 2013.
As part of its partnership with all Missouri City businesses, Republic has agreed to incur the solid waste franchise fee, instead of passing the cost on to customers. This value-added benefit will help improve efficiencies for all partners. And, Republic vehicles will display decals authorizing them to operate in the City.
Companies that become new Republic customers will receive trash containers of a different color. Overall, the transition to a sole provider for all businesses will result in less wear and tear on City streets due to fewer trucks driving on area roadways and less traffic in parking lots. Additionally, Missouri City companies can expect improved service as each route will have one Republic employee dedicated to servicing it.
In addition to being the City’s commercial solid waste collector, Republic also provides pickup to more than 60 percent of area households.
