Sugar Land Democrats Club held their monthly meeting in honor of President Obama’s National Day of Service. The President asked Americans to make an ongoing commitment in their communities focusing on the areas of health, faith, education, the environment, honoring our veterans and military families, community resilience, and economic development
Keynote speaker Mr. David Knox, Director of Communications for NRG Energy gave overview of current energy supply and demand in Texas, the future of energy supply, and the recent economic developments for the Parish plant in Fort Bend County. David Knox advised that NRG Energy and the Department of Energy are investing almost $800 million in the first-ever large scale carbon capture and sequestration plant at the Fort Bend County plant. Mr. Knox explained the health and environmental benefits to our community by way of the carbon capture project and their plans to meet the new EPA requirements to reduce Mercury emissions by 2015.
State Representative Ron Reynolds HD-27 gave update on the Legislative session. Mr. Reynolds noted how NRG Energy is making sizable investments in solar energy in California, but none in the state of Texas. Texas has incredible sun energy resources; however, the priorities of the Texas government to date have been oil, gas, and wind. Mr. Reynolds advised the top priorities for this Legislative session would be educational funding, transportation, and water. Rep. Reynolds asked the members to support his bill to create single member voting districts for the Fort Bend Independent School District. Creating single member districts would create more opportunities for diversity on our school board. Today’s FBISD board of seven has only one minority, whereas, the school children of FBISD are African-American 31%, Hispanic 25%, Asian-American 22%, and Whites 22%
