Fort Bend ISD lunch menus will see minimal change resulting from the recently announced new federal nutrition standards. As part of the 2010 Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has established new and improved nutrition standards for school lunches. Fortunately, Fort Bend ISD’s Child Nutrition Services will only need to make small adjustments to its menus to comply with the new standards because the District already follows a more nutritional meal plan for its schools.
Child Nutrition will offer additional whole grain products and will increase the number of servings of fruits and vegetables. The District will implement these changes in the 2012-2013 school year, a year ahead of when the regulations are mandated to go into effect.
The new federal standards mark the first major change to school meals, on a national scale, in more than 15 years.
