The event, hosted by the “UP” Foundation, a 501c(3) organization founded by Seattle Seahawks player Russell Okung and his mother Dorothy Okung, took place on March 1 at 11 a.m. at George Bush High School, 6707 FM 1964 Road in Richmond, Texas.
The initiative, called “Knowledge is Power,” brought together a team of NFL Moms for a roundtable discussion with student-athletes and their parents to share their insights and experiences in transitioning their sons to college and to the professional level.
The panel of NFL Moms included Mary Taylor Ojo (son, Bobby Taylor, #21, Philadelphia Eagles), Gloria Orakpo (son, Brian Orakpo, #98, Washington Redskins), Cleotha Aldridge (son, Allen Aldridge Jr., #57, Denver Broncos), Ann Cockrell (son, Thurman Thomas, #34, Buffalo Bills), Felicia Young (son, Vince Young, #9, Philadelphia Eagles) and Dorothy Okung, (son, Russell Okung, #76, Seattle Seahawks).
“We want to mentor the boys and let them know someone cares and to let them know that with a good education you cannot fail,” said Dorothy Okung.
The organization’s first roundtable was held at her son’s high school alma mater where he played offensive tackle and was named first-team all-Greater Houston, first-team all-district, and was later listed as the 33rd best offensive tackle prospect of the class of 2006.
The event provided an open forum for questions from student-athletes and their parents.
The group plans to set up panels in high schools locally and across the country.
