Rep. Pete Olson visited last week with soldiers, sailors, and airmen at Ellington Field to thank them for their service and reassure them of his commitment to them and their families as they serve in harm’s way. Amid speculation over a government shutdown and the uncertain budget, Olson re-affirmed his support of a deal to cut unnecessary spending without threatening operations that support the military and their families:
“Congress’ budget problems are not your problems. Each one of you serve this country honorably and deserve our commitment in return. I can remember worrying about my own family while serving abroad as a Naval aviator and I can’t imagine undermining the effectiveness of our fighting force abroad by failing to keep our commitment to their families by paying them fully and on time. I thank each one of you for your sacrifice and dedication. As a pilot I understand the importance of covering the ‘six.’ While you watch our backs abroad, you can count on me to watch yours in Congress. To the families of our Lone Star Marines serving in Afghanistan, Semper Fidelis means I will ensure we maintain our commitments.”
Currently, Marine reservists from 1/23, the “Lone Star Battalion” headquartered at Ellington, are serving on deployment in the Helmand province of Afghanistan.
