Congressman Pete Olson had the privilege of meeting baby Audrina Cardenas, an infant who was born with her heart outside her chest wall and required a team of 80 health care providers at Texas Children’s Hospital to save her life.
He was also honored to meet Jamie Schanbaum, who contracted a severe case of bacterial meningitis when she was a freshman at UT-Austin. After her strong recovery, she worked with the state legislature to require meningococcal vaccines for all college students living in dorms or near campus. Both girls were in Washington, DC with family advocating for Children’s Hospitals.
Rep. Olson said, “It was an honor to meet both of these courageous young girls. They are an inspiration and testament to the powers of modern medicine.”
