For the Fort Bend Star
Need to keep the kids occupied this summer?
Prepare for Freak Out Friday at Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center, where you can meet and greet your favorite galaxy loving movie characters.
Every two weeks, the center’s new attraction, Sci-Fi Summer, checks in with different character appearances from science fiction movies children (and adults) know and love.
Over the summer, youngsters can sail away with Princess Moana, meet up with sticky fingers Spider-Man and the Black Widow in July, and catch a photo op with Star Wars personalities Darth Vader, a Jedi and Padmé, and the hair-loving Trolls, Branch and Poppy, in August. Last week, the first Freak Out featured the Minions, appearing with goggle-wearing Lucy and the not so evil Gru from the “Despicable Me” movies.
Focusing on fun and learning, while staying true to the summer theme, the center invites you to steer various robots from “Dr. Who” in the Robotics Lab, which is inside the Mercedes-Benz Precision Center. Look for Time Warped Travel Wonder Week and Sci-Fi FX Science Wonder Week, Picture Mixture at the Art Academy, creating a magazine collage of a character or decorate an extraterrestrial mask and become an out of this world alien in the next few months.
Director Elaine Holthe calls it a true fun-filled fan celebration for the entire family.
“This is our first week with the Minions, and with our new programming. We’ve been celebrating since school let out. We’ve got decorations, activities – and kids love it,” she said.
Children love sci-fi and moms and dads will, too.
Don’t forget to bring a camera.
