The Ridge Point High football team just continues to make history.

The Panthers (11-3) edged perennial power Angleton (8-6), 36-35 in overtime, in the Class 5A, Division II State Quarterfinals last Saturday at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

They’ll face undefeated Cedar Park (14-0) in the state semifinals at 2 p.m. Saturday at NRG Stadium – home of the Houston Texans.

The winner will play Lake Dallas or Frisco Lone Star in the 5A-II State Championship Game at noon on Dec. 19 at NRG.

Ridge Point trailed, 21-6, in the second quarter but scored 20 unanswered points for a 26-21 lead.

Panthers kicker Grant Carlson, a Boston College commit, tied the game at 29 with 5:46 in the fourth quarter.

In overtime, B.J. Rainford (115 yards and two touchdowns) scored his second touchdown of the day on a two-yard run, and Carlson kicked the PAT.

Angleton responded with a two-yard run by Seth Cosme. The Wildcats went for the victory, but the pass failed and Ridge Point earned the win.

Ridge Point quarterback Shane Gosson passed for 215 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.

The Panthers have won 10 of their past 11 games.

Cedar Park defeated Corpus Christi Calallen, 35-21, in its state quarterfinal victory.

It was only the third time this season that the Timberwolves won by fewer than 20 points. All 14 of their victories have come by double digits.

The Timberwolves finished the regular season as the top-ranked team in Texas Football’s 5A Top 25 poll. Ridge Point – which didn’t finish in the Top 25 – has victories over two teams in the Top 10 – No. 4 Crosby and No. 8 Stratford.
