PetSmart Charities plans Fort Bend adoption events

For The Star
It’s not often that animal shelters team up with local pet stores, but in February, Fort Bend County may see more forever homes for furry friends than ever before.
PetSmart Charities, a non-profit animal welfare organization has helped over 6 million animals find homes. Several times a year, they sponsor National Adoption Weekend. The next event is Feb. 12 – 14 at all PetSmart locations in Fort Bend County.
PetSmart, Sugar Land Animal Services and Petopia host regular weekend adoption events. Teamed up with the National Adoption Weekend though, be prepared for a store filled with wagging tails, wet noses and unconditional love.
Locally, Petopia, a part of Sugar Land Animal Services, partners with Petsmart to find homes for stray and impounded animals coming through the Animal Services division.
The partnership provides an opportunity to find forever homes for animals in the community. While the National Adoption Event brings in more homes for pets nationwide, the weekly community adoption events, such as the ones hosted by Sugar Land Animal Services, are also supported by grants provided by PetSmart Charities.
In Fort Bend County, the animal adoption events are held every weekend at the PetSmart location at 16758 Southwest Freeway in Sugarland. You can find cats housed there seven days a week, and dogs are there Friday, Saturdays and Sundays.
The adoption policy at Sugar Land Animal Services offers a unique way to get into the adoption door. While they don’t offer straight out adoptions at the facility, they do have what they call a “sleepover” program. If a potential adoptive parent comes in and finds a cat or dog they like, they can take the animal home for a sleepover to see if the relationship is a perfect fit.
You provide the movie and snacks. You have him or her stay with you for 3 – 5 days. If you fall in love with your new addition, you can come in and adopt at the Animal Shelter at 101 Gillingham Drive in Sugarland. If the animal is not a perfect fit, you can bring them back to the location on Gillingham Drive.
So it’s a win for everybody – animals, the City’s Animal Services Department PetSmart and the adoptive parents. The partnership is made possible by Petopia volunteers who commit a weekend – or two, or three – to finding homes for animals at the City’s shelter.
And there are a lot of animals. According to Kathryn Ketchum, Animal Services Manager for the City of Sugar Land, “All 24 kennels are full and volunteers are always needed.”
Interested in volunteering?
Responsibilities include walking the dogs, answering questions about adoption, bathing animals, help with offsite adoptions ( such as the events each weekend at the PetSmart location on Southwest Freeway) and filling out paperwork for sleepovers.
The Animal Services Department also provides education on responsible animal care, pet ownership and even living with wildlife.
Sign up now and you could be helping out with the National Adoption Weekend next month. Another way of saying there’s ‘A Purr-fect Package’ or ‘A Dog-Gone Deal’ waiting for you.
