The recent City of Sugar Land run-off election revealed the true spirit of the democratic process. Good hearted Americans are fair and considerate and it is this spirit of kindness that has made this country a better place. Unfortunately, in the case of one of the City of Sugar Land council runoff elections the process of “making sausage” became fairly unsettling.
When elected officials choose sides based upon their unsupported belief that one candidate is being victimized by another, without proof thereof, it creates an even larger problem. Unintentionally, the rush to engage in political correctness to assist one candidate unfairly leads the public to turn away from the other candidate. That holds true for all office holders who sometimes position themselves in a politically convenient stance with a limited review of the facts. With the best of intentions the elected official can cause seriously negative repercussions for a candidate who was playing fair all along.
Let us hope our leaders and media will carefully study the history and mindset of the people they serve. In a rush to be politically correct, they should refrain from attending to only the loudest screams and most vigorous opposition. A fair unbiased response from those in leadership positions should be just that, and not carry undertones of ambiguous support.
Furthermore, it is hoped that members of our community will put the best interests of this nation first and will help us defend our liberty and freedom from enemies at home and abroad. Let us hope this spirit of fairness will encourage all immigrants to honor the Constitution and democratic values of America. It’s all about the red, white and blue!
While this was just a democratic process in a fast-growing small city, it had far reaching implications. And that’s why there was a lot at stake in this election!
