Having been transformed by the recent completion of the SMSD bond project, the Margaret Havens Library & Media Center rededication ceremony will be hosted on Monday, January 6, 2014 at 5:30pm. Hours for the library have been extended to 8:30pm, Monday through Friday to encourage, allow, and provide members of the Stafford community access to their resources.
The library is named after Mayor Leonard Scarcella’s mother who taught and administrated for a total of 48 years in the Missouri City School District, Sugar Land School District, and then Fort Bend ISD when the districts were consolidated. In 1984 Margaret Havens was elected to the SMSD Board and served 9 years. The Mayor said, “She believed fervently that the creation and implementation of SMSD provided Stafford children with the likelihood to obtain the best educational opportunities, and worked diligently for the establishment and success of SMSD, to the potential detriment of her livelihood and reputation. No one was happier, nor more proud, when Stafford children got off the school buses and entered the converted builder’s warehouse turned elementary school on August 26, 1982.”
The librarian in charge today, Adrienne Lee, is very pleased to work in a beautiful library. Prior to coming to SMSD, she was a high school librarian for five years and before that a kindergarten teacher for 13. Ms. Lee said, “Although I loved being a teacher, I must admit that being a librarian is by far the best job on the planet.” As a child she loved reading so much she created a mini-library in her bedroom complete with check-out forms for book borrowers. “My greatest love is for a student to walk into the library, select a book that I recommend, and then return the next week wanting more books. This is what a good librarian can do, and this is the reason I am so passionate about libraries.”
Also being recognized on that day is the new College and Career Readiness Center that shares space with the library. Twelve certifications of completion are offered through this program: Vet Tech, Child Care, Basic Officer/911, Welding 1, Pharmacy Tech, and Project Lead the Way to name a few.
Mark your calendars to be part of the ribbon cutting ceremony and view the transformation at the SMSD campus.
