Ridgegate Elementary School will be the subject of an educational video promoting the Academy of Reading and Academy of Math web-based instructional programs, provided by EPS School Specialty Literacy and Intervention.
The company recently sent a production crew to Ridgegate to film teachers instructing students in both programs, and to record personal testimonies from students, parents, school staff and administrators, who support both programs. The video will soon appear on the company’s website.
In 2012, Fort Bend ISD introduced the Academy of Math program to help close the achievement gap for struggling students and meet the learning needs of at-risk students across the District. Ridgegate Elementary is also taking advantage of the Academy of Reading program to help improve student learning in reading.
Through the Academy of Reading, struggling readers in grades 2-12 receive training in the five core areas of literacy outlined by the National Reading Panel – phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. The program helps students break down the complex skills of reading into manageable tasks and employs a structured and sequential approach. This method gives students the foundation they need to grasp increasingly challenging reading skills and concepts.
The Academy of Math is an intensive intervention tool used for instruction, assessment, and monitoring student progress. It offers a self-paced, personalized program that helps students build a strong foundation in math. The program builds math skills for beginner through algebra-ready students in 10 skill areas that align to the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics standards.
“We have experienced impressive results, with some students advancing by as much as two grade levels in reading and math, by utilizing both online academy programs,” said Lavanta Williams, principal at Ridgegate Elementary School.
One of the highlights of the online academy programs is the “reward system” that helps students build confidence. As students master each task, they receive encouragement in the form of messages of congratulations, awards, and certificates. This keeps the students engaged and gives them the confidence they need to tackle more difficult skill levels.
