Sen. Kolkhorst re-appointed to statewide committee to study coastal barriers

Senator Lois Kolkhorst

State Sen. Lois Kolkhorst has been re-appointed to a Joint Legislative Interim Committee to study a Coastal Barrier System for the Texas coast.

With a district that spans nearly a third of the Texas coastline, Kolkhorst has been tapped by Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick to represent coastal stakeholders and join fellow lawmakers to study the structural options that could be built to prevent storm surges along Texas’ coast.

“Hurricane Harvey has once again shown us the economic and personal losses that are possible from a natural disaster along our Texas coast,” Kolkhorst said. “Now, more than ever Texas, must find a long-term solution to prepare for these future coastal catastrophes.”
The Joint Interim Committee to Study a Coastal Barrier System will report to the 86th Legislature the feasibility of creating and maintaining a coastal barrier system that includes a series of gates and barriers to prevent storm surge damage to gulf beaches, coastal ports, industry, and personal property.

“In recent days we have seen how important it is that Texas has the best possible systems and infrastructure in place, not only for day-to-day operations, but also for unexpected and sometimes disastrous events,” said Patrick. “I know that Senator Kolkhorst is committed to ensuring Texas will continue to lead in every way.”
