Shattered glass; shattered lives

April 6, 2011 by FortBendStar

By LeaAnne Klentzman

Glass shattered and gunshots rang out Friday, April 1, in Rosenberg at a local motel leaving two families devastated and the students and faculty of LCISD’s George Ranch High School mourning the loss of a beloved coach and counselor.

Friday afternoon, just minutes before 5 pm.. Rosenberg police sergeant Brian Baker was dispatched to a disturbance call at the Regency Inn and Suites on S 59 just south of State Highway 36. When Sgt. Baker arrived he discovered what police referred to as a “violent crime scene.”

Over the weekend, the facts of the case unfolded and became public. Two of the shooting victims were staff at LCISD’s George Ranch High School and the third; was the estranged husband of the female victim. According to authorities, George Ranch head football coach Trevor Lane White, 39, and Instructional Coordinator Destiny Ann Pickett, 39, were shot and killed then their purported shooter, Pickett’s 50 year old husband Clifford turned the gun on himself.

According to police, Coach White was found slain at the window, inside a room at the motel, just minutes after arriving. Ms. Pickett was found slain outside the room in what was characterized as an attempt to get away from her attacker. She was shot multiple times. The shooter, Clifford Pickett, was found dead near his estranged wife. A pistol was recovered from the scene.

According to county records, the Picketts, who were Pecan Grove residents, were engaged in a rancorous divorce that had been filed earlier this year.

Coach Trevor White leaves behind a wife, two young sons, and a host of adoring athletes and students from his many years of coaching. Before heading up the coaching staff at George Ranch, White coached in several different schools as he worked his way to head coach. While at Alief-Taylor High School Coach White mentored several young men who went on to play college football for schools such as Boston College, Duke, Texas A&M, and UT to mention a few. Some of his former Alief players are currently playing in the NFL.

Services for Trevor L. White will be held Thursday morning at 10:30 am at the First Baptist Church in Richmond. Visitation is Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 pm.

Destiny Pickett leaves behind a daughter just days shy of her 13th birthday and a 9 year old son who are being cared for by their maternal grandparents. Services for Ms. Pickett are also scheduled for Thursday. No information was available on Clifford Pickett.

The students and teachers are truely heart broken. If you were to enter our school, the students have made banners for our lost faculty and there are flowers too. Most of them attended both services and have shed many tears. They also organized a afternoon to where they themselves shared stories about the good times and made all the students laugh. They will remain in our hearts and never be forgotten! We love them very much and will always remember them. And for Coach White, our football players are promising him they will make it to state for him!
