The Atlantic League First Half Freedom Division Champion Sugar Land Skeeters announced that the club has named Chris Jones as the organization’s new general manager. The announcement was made by Opening Day Partners Chairman Peter Kirk and President and Chief Operating Officer Jon Danos.
Jones comes to Sugar Land from his most-recent stint as vice president and general manager of the Lake Elsinore Storm, the Class A affiliate of the San Diego Padres in the California League. Jones spent 12 years with the Storm and served as general manager for the last eight years.
In 2008, the Houston native was elected California League Executive of the Year and took home the Heroes in Education Award for his efforts in assisting local schools in the Lake Elsinore community. Under Jones’ guidance, the Storm also received national recognition as the recipients of the Larry MacPhail Award (2011) and the Bob Freitas Award (2007) for their promotional achievements and community involvement.
A graduate of Bellaire High School, Jones began his professional career with Texas Stadium in hospitality and suite management for the Dallas Cowboys. He later moved to the High Desert Mavericks of the California League and served in a similar capacity prior to his tenure with Lake Elsinore. During his time in California, Jones was named a board member for the Lake Elsinore Chamber of Commerce while also serving as president of the local Little League.
“Chris brings deep experience as a general manager and understands the brand of minor league baseball as well as anyone,” said Danos. “What separated Chris was his proven ability to cultivate and nurture relationships, both externally and internally. We are thrilled to introduce him to our partners, our season ticket holders and the Sugar Land community.”
Jones, his wife Anna and three children plan to join Sugar Land in August, while the Skeeters look to continue their first half momentum into the Atlantic League postseason playoffs in September.
