Sometimes I hate the internet…..I can’t tell you how many friends, relatives, and old classmates who are no longer speaking to me because I’ve told them off in the past years. The subject of my ire, in all cases, has been the internet and the misinformation they have continually sent out before checking their facts with several of the very good on-line checking services; organizations like FactCheck.org, PolitiFact.com, Snopes.com, OpenSecrets.org, TruthorFiction.com and HoaxSlayer.com.
Yes, the internet has all the information in the world at your fingertips, but it also has all the misinformation that crazy political pontificators (don’t they know that is my job) send out, often to everyone on their email list.
I usually take just so much of it. I think the ones that really drive me up the wall are those that tell me if I don’t send this out to 12 people in the next 2 minute certain terrible things will happen to me, not the least of which may be losing certain parts of my anatomy.
So, I usually just take it and erase it. I do open their emails because hope springs eternal there may just be the smallest chance that it may contain a personal message. But, no, it’s usually something about how Obama wasn’t born in America, won’t salute the flag, has even burned it or won’t wear a flag pin.
When I get that drivel over and over, it finally just gets on my last nerve. Maybe I don’t remember correctly, but I just don’t think anyone ever sent out reams of emails about George Bush. Oh, I heard all the rumors–he was a legacy at Yale and really wasn’t very smart; he never showed up to fly in the Alabama National Guard; he was a former drinker/snorter yada, yada, yada.
But my “in” box wasn’t filled with all the urban legends about his exploits because most Democrats must just have better sense than to embarrass themselves by sending out erroneous stuff like that.
But the current crop of Republicans and their fellow travelers have no such qualms. They send out all this misinformation and then when you check with one of the websites mentioned above and send it back to them and all the other people who got the same email by hitting “reply all,” they claim that the checking website is financed by some left-wing organization, just like they claim everything but Fox News is owned by the left-wing.
One thing they overlook is the fact that most news media is owned by people interested in one thing–making money. They have a tendency to lean to the right if anything else.
Anyway, the latest diatribe was from my only living uncle and I just threw a fit and sent him back a blistering email about how he should read his Bible more and quit telling all those lies about Barack Obama.
At least I didn’t block him from my email like I have some former classmates who knew how I felt about the habit of forwarding such drivel and just continued to send it to me.
I heard from another relative who is also on my uncle’s email distribution list that I should be more patient and teach him how to use the Snopes.com website. Maybe so.
Hey, all you out there. It’s not hard. Just go to one of the websites I mentioned earlier and when you open it there will be a search option box. You can type in the latest rumor that some other uneducated, right wing, terrorist has sent you and the web site will do a little search and tell you if the rumor is true or false and will offer you an explanation. Sometimes, it will even tell you how the lie originated.
IOU…..Let’s talk about our country’s debt. Here are some facts I copied from the New York Times about the various presidents and how much debt they accumulated. We’ll start with Reagan. Our debt was $1.0 trillion when he came into office. He spent money on defense and permanent tax cuts and added another $1.9 trillion. So now we owe $2.9 trillion.
George H.W. Bush amassed another $1.5 trillion due to the first Gulf War and a downturn in the economy. So now our debt is $4.4 trillion.
Bill Clinton came along and despite a couple of years of a balanced budget and surpluses, deficit spending in other years added another $1.4 trillion, making our country now owe $5.8 trillion.
Then here comes drunken Indian George Bush who has two unfunded wars, an unfunded prescription drug benefit added to medicare, huge tax cuts, economic downturns and a full out recession.
Wild Spending George amassed a $6.1 trillion deficit, making us now owe a total of $11.9 trillion.
Obama came into office after the recession started and in an effort to rescue the economy, he spent money we didn’t have on a stimulus, tax cuts, the continuing wars, and unemployment compensation. In a short time, he added another $2.4 trillion to our deficit, making us now owe $14.3 trillion.
This is a terrible debt and threatens to sink us, but let’s put blame where it belongs. George Bush was in over his head and when 9/11 occurred, he did the only thing he knew to do–he threw money at it with a complaisant congress.
So now comes all these fiscal deficit hawks who are mostly Republican and don’t want to blame their own party (for anything), so they make a lot of noise about Barack Obama and his spending. As far as I can see, Obama has been very reasonable and tried to get along with everybody.
We don’t need to really blame anyone. We just need to do something about it. And everyone knows what that has to be. We simply have to get out of the two wars and collect tax money from the rich people and companies who have been enjoying the lowest tax rate and largest profits in the last 30 years.
We don’t need to try to balance the budget on the backs of those who live from paycheck to paycheck. We don’t need to starve our schools, police forces, parks, and roads. What are we? Mexico? If we are not careful, we will look like that in a decade-no schools, no roads, a failing infrastructure. But there will be some very rich people and very rich companies who pay lobbyists, not taxes..
