I guess he really did have something to do with it….It’s been bandied about that Republican County Chairman Rick Miller may have had something to do with the anonymous mailer sent out about Sugar Land City Council candidate Farah Ahmed. It seems hard to believe that someone in his position would do something so shameful as that but recent events seem to point to that rumor being true.
Several other officials in Fort Bend County have jumped to Ahmed’s defense including Sugar Land Mayor Jimmy Thompson, County Judge Bob Hebert, and from the very beginning County Clerk Dianne Wilson, District Attorney John Healey, and Democratic County Chair Steven Brown. Additionally, the “Star’s” website received several letters after my column about it was published.
But Rick Miller had a very telling comment. He emailed Lindsey Wise with the Houston Chronicle, whom I assume had contacted him for a comment, ”voters should look into the allegations on the flier before they make their own decisions about how to vote.”
I wonder if this has anything to do with Farah Ahmed resigning as the Fort Bend Republican Party’s legal counsel when Miller and his bunch took over? Nah. He couldn’t be that petty, could he?
Supposedly, Ahmed’s opponent in the run-off, Harish Jajoo, has made a comment condemning the mailer, but if he has, he has not sent it to the “Star”. He did respond to our reporter’s question where he condemned it and said he had sent a comment on Friday to someone at our office named “Patti.” No Patti or Patty works here.
I guess the things that upset me the most about all of this is that if Farha Ahmed had done all the things she has been accused of, it still doesn’t disqualify her from serving ably on the Sugar Land City Council.
Sugar Land has a mosque on one of the city’s busiest streets. I know because I was an invited guest at its opening. Sugar Land is supposed to be a city that welcomes diversity. This isn’t very welcoming although Ahmed has lived here for 20 years.
And by the way, she was appointed by the Bush White House to help with some Muslim legal questions.
It seems that being a Muslim in Sugar Land today is tantamount to being a Communist or Black in the 50s, a Japanese-American during World War II, Jewish in Germany in the 30s or American Indian in the 1800s.
A lot of people need to start reading their Bibles.
Hard to stay upbeat…..I know all our readers out there are going through many of the same things I am. It’s so hot and our carefully tended yards and gardens are on the verge of dying. The economy is so bad and our carefully tended retirement accounts and savings are on the verge of dying. Our nation is facing a financial crisis and our ideals and hopes are on the verge of dying while our elected officials are trying to find which political party to blame the most.
But just remember to fill your life every day with the joy of your children or grandchildren or friends. Tell them every day how much you love them and pray a lot! I am convinced we will get through all of this.
