Concerned that young children were going hungry on weekends during summer break, parishioners at St. Catherine of Sienna Episcopal Church in Sienna Plantation, Missouri City, collected over 200 boxes of cereal to be donated to families enrolled in the Lunches of Love program which provides lunches for children in the Richmond-Rosenberg area.
The Church, which is already involved with the Lunches of Love program by donating time and resources, heard that, although lunches were provided during the week, the children did not necessarily have food for Saturday and Sunday. Parishioners responded the next week by celebrating “Cereal Sunday.” A month after the first collection, the program asked for more help and once again the parish provided another generous cereal donation .
“Outreach to those in the Houston area who need our help is our main focus this year,” states Pastor Fr. Mike Besson. “Lunches of Love is one of the projects that is important to us. We’re willing to help with whatever assistance this program needs.
Currently St. Catherine’s is developing ideas for assisting St. John’s Baptist Church in Missouri City which needs some reconstruction and support.
