Stafford cheerleaders win top awards at camp

The Stafford High cheerleading team attended the National Cheerleader Association summer camp at the University of Texas at San Antonio last week week.

At the NCA Summer Camp, the Spirit Stick is one of the top awards that teams can receive. It’s given to teams that exhibit all the qualities cheerleaders should have – heart, diligence, dedication, good sportsmanship, a positive attitude and teamwork.

The Stafford varsity collected five spirit sticks during the camp. Stafford varsity was also awarded four blue superior ribbons which is the highest award one can receive during evaluations of their cheers and chants.

The NCA staff presented The National Championship BID Award, The Stunt S.A.F.E. Award, and Technical Excellence Award also to Stafford varsity for always demonstrating that the work is worth it.

Out of all 20 teams present at camp, co-captain/ senior Jessica Fortune was awarded with the individual leadership award for exemplifying great leadership qualities to all the teams.

Five SHS cheerleaders were nominated for All-American Cheerleader: Captain/senior Faith Odigie, co-captain/senior Jessica Fortune, historian/senior Alyssa Jackson, spirit leader/junior Kennedi Robinson, and freshman Nyla Conway.

The team was also awarded the Herkie Team Award plaque which was an award voted on by the other 19 teams for having the most heart and enthusiasm throughout the four-day camp.

Lastly, SHS competed in the cheer and chant competition and took first place trophies in both categories.
