It’s Science Fair time at Stafford Middle School and judges are needed! Projects are set up in the Margaret Havens Library Media Center located at the secondary schools and judging times are from 7:30 am to 8:30 pm today and tomorrow, December 11th-12th. Volunteers can report to the circulation desk and select the number of projects to evaluate to fit their schedule. Please support our students and contribute to their learning experience!
Holiday spirit and sounds are resounding throughout our community! The Middle and High Schools’ Choirs performed at the City of Stafford’s Christmas program, Oyster Creek Manor, Sugar Land Health Care Center, Comerica Bank, Methodist Hospital, and St. Luke’s Hospital. They also performed a holiday concert at the Stafford Civic Center on Monday. The Middle and High Schools’ Bands performed at the Stafford Centre last night, and pre-kindergarten students have performed in Jingle Jam concerts yesterday and today. The final Jingle Jam performance is scheduled for 6 pm tonight at the Elementary School cafeteria. Yule on Spartans!
Stafford High School Choir and Band students are advancing to regional choirs and bands! Soprano Juliane Bilocura advanced from district choir to region choir and will sing songs in German, Spanish, Latin, and Russian to continue advancement to state. Twenty-eight band students made the All-Region Band and four qualified as alternates. Out of those students, seven are advancing to area competition in January. Go Spartans!
Stafford High School students in Nathanial Joseph’s and Sandra Driver-Matthews’ classes traveled to Rice University on December 5th to attend the 11th Annual Rice Alliance for Information Technology, Entrepreneurship and Web Venture Forum. They were able to get a first-look at emerging software and meet representatives from companies pitching their products to investors. SHS Class of 2012 Salutatorian Brian Hua is attending Rice University and met up with the group during their visit. Go Spartans!
Football may be over but swimming and basketball teams are in full gear! The Boys Basketball team is hosting a tournament beginning at 4 pm this Thursday, December 12th through Saturday, December 14th. All games will take place in the Competition and Spartan Gyms and ticket prices are $4 for adults and $2 for students. A schedule is attached.
The George Foundation awarded the Stafford MSD Education Foundation a $50,000 grant to invest in an endowment for teacher classroom grants! The George Foundation supports education and Fort Bend County non-profit organizations in numerous ways including scholarships, the Youth in Philanthropy (YIP) program, and information workshops on how to receive funding for college. On Thursday, January 23, 2014, the George Foundation is hosting an event for high school and college students to learn how to access post-secondary school scholarships. Representatives from Houston Community College, University of Houston, Wharton Junior College, Texas State Technical College and Scholarship America will present information on how to fill out FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) Forms, how scholarships are evaluated, and how to continue to pursue scholarships when attending college. The event will take place at the Susan Ryon Davis Multipurpose Room (Room 103), Brazos Hall, at the University of Houston Sugar Land located at 14004 University Blvd. in Sugar Land. Seating is limited so early arrival is encouraged. Registration is 6:00 pm and the presentations are from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm. For additional information, call Theresa Kopnicky at 281-342-6109.
