The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) recently named the Sugar Land Public Safety Dispatch Center a 9-1-1 Call Center Partner.
The designation recognizes training, policies and procedures intended to ensure that Sugar Land dispatchers are ready to respond to reports of missing, abducted or exploited children.
Steps to achieve NCMEC partnership status include:
• completion of NCMEC training for call center managers or directors;
• formal training of all 9-1-1 telecommunicators in best practices for handling of calls for missing and/or sexually exploited children; and
• formal adoption of the American National Standards Institute’s approved standard for public safety telecommunicators when responding to calls of missing, abducted and sexually exploited children.
“The Sugar Land Public Safety Dispatch Center has created a child-centered 9-1-1 system based on the belief that there is nothing more important to their community than protecting children,” said William Hinkle, the Child Centered 911 Missing Kids Readiness Project chair. “Through their achievement, (they) have demonstrated a commitment to improving the standard of care for the children in our cities and towns across the nation.”
Whether responding to reports of missing children, fires, highway accidents or medical calls for help, Sugar Land’s public safety dispatchers are part of a highly trained team of responders. When citizens call for help, they’re the voice on the other end of the line, ready to help 24/7.
The nature of a call for assistance determines the type of equipment and personnel needed to mitigate the situation. Their ability to size up situations and allocate the appropriate resources under high stress situations is crucial during emergencies.
For 9-1-1 emergencies, citizens should provide dispatchers with the purpose of the call, the location of the emergency and a phone contact. This information is especially important for cell phone callers, as 9-1-1 calls are routed to the dispatch center in the area where the cell phone service originates.
Dispatchers also handle calls for non-emergency service at 281- 275-2020. If in doubt as to whether a call for service qualifies as an emergency, just call 9-1-1.
