Sugar Land employees’ selfless, philanthropic efforts during 2012 benefited the Salvation Army, United Way, Toys for Tots and other charitable Fort Bend organizations.
Many of these employees were recognized for acts of charity and kindness at Sugar Land’s recent employee banquet.
Each year, the City celebrates “Champion Employees” at a banquet that recognizes individual contributions to making Sugar Land “One of America’s Best.”
“Sugar Land employees are dedicated to providing excellent customer service,” said Assistant City Manager Karen Glynn. “This includes donating their time and talents outside of the normal work day to community organizations.”
Volunteer efforts during 2012 included the following activities:
• Sugar Land Police Department participated in the Exchange Club Spaghetti Cook Off that benefits local charitable causes including Fort Bend Crime Stoppers, the Fort Bend Family YMCA and other Fort Bend non-profits.
• The Police Department distributed toys to under-privileged families through the “Santa Behind the Badge” program.
• Twenty-seven employees from departments across the city volunteered to teach basic business concepts to area schoolchildren through the Junior Achievement program.
• Employees adopted over 100 angels through the Salvation Army Angel Tree Program.
• In 2012, employees pledged $3,165 to United Way.
• The City held five blood drives last year, and employees donated a total of 77 pints.
• Fifty-two boxes of food were donated to Houston Marine Moms to benefit marines serving overseas.
• Thirty large bags of toys were collected for the Toys for Tots program at the Fort Bend County Holiday Bowl.
• An estimated 500 pounds of food was donated at the 2012 Employee Banquet for the Parks and Recreation Department’s “Share Your Holiday” food drive.
“We may not see the full returns on this investment for a while; however, I am positive the returns will be felt in our community and surrounding area,” said Outstanding Employee Team nominator Elizabeth Mangum.
