Sugar Land has politely turned down nearly $5 million to re-name itself SugarDaddie.com for the next 10 years.
The dating web site originally offered $500,000, but Mayor James Thompson said “thanks, but no thanks. We’re really not for sale.”
SugarDaddie.com is a dating site based in Florida that caters to affluent men who want to meet attractive, young women.
A spokesman for SugarDaddie.com said the offer was legitimate.‘The company is trying to put itself literally and figuratively on the map,” Darren Shuster said. “It is certainly a marketing campaign,” he added.
Shuster said after Thompson turned down the first offer, “We did some calculations on the back of a napkin and decided that four and a half million would probably hit the spot.”
Thompson agreed to a second meeting with Shuster but had a proposition of his own.
“I said, Why don’t you relocate here and for every dollar that you save in taxes you can donate 50 percent to charity,” Thompson said.
SugarDaddie.com declined Thompson’s offer.
The web site has pro-po-sitioned at least two other cities with the word “sugar” in their name.
