With the help of walkers ranging from a 13-year-old award winner to a 92-year-old church volunteer, the 5th annual TelfairLife Charity of Your Choice Walk raised a record $76,474 to benefit 13 Fort Bend charities, beating last year’s total by a whopping 71 percent.
Held on Saturday, Oct. 13 at the Telfair community in Sugar Land, the Charity of Your Choice Walk drew 655 registered walkers, a 13 percent increase over the number of walkers last year.
Most of the proceeds came from registration fees paid by the walkers, who were able to choose the charity that received 100 percent of their fee. TelfairLife, a nonprofit community service organization serving Telfair and the surrounding Fort Bend area, provided $6,000 in challenge grants.
Fort Bend Habitat for Humanity won the first place Charity Challenge grant of $1,500 for having the largest number of registered walkers, 132.
With 111 walkers, Child Advocates of Fort Bend won the second place Charity Challenge grant of $750. The third place award of $250 went to Blessed Be Hope for Three, with 63 walkers.
The Team Challenge grant of $1,500 was awarded to the Christ Church Jaunters, from United Methodist Church in First Colony, whose members included Betty Barton, 92. This team raised $37,100 for their charity, Fort Bend Habitat for Humanity.
Challenge grants of $1,000 each were awarded to the individual walkers who raised the most money for their charities. Jacob Liang, 13, raised $4,236 for Second Mile Mission Center, and Darla Farmer raised $2,500 for Blessed Be Hope for Three.
Counting this year’s event, the TelfairLife Charity of Your Choice Walk has raised a total of $280,474 for Fort Bend charities since it began in 2008.
Other charities benefiting from this year’s Charity of Your Choice Walk included The Arc of Fort Bend, Brazos Bend Guardianship Services, East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry, FBISD Educational Foundation, Fort Bend Community Partners Rainbow Room, Fort Bend Family Health Center, Fort Bend Family Promise, NAMI Fort Bend, and Shape Up Sugar Land.
“Since the TelfairLife Charity of Your Choice Walk began, we have set new records each and every year, thanks to the energy and generosity of the Fort Bend community,” said Nicki Raimundo, TelfairLife walk director. “The more this annual event succeeds, the more Fort Bend benefits, and that is very exciting.”
