Imagine the loneliness and isolation of living in Fort Bend County and not being able to read, write or speak English. Imagine being considered for a promotion in your workplace and not getting it because your reading and writing skills are at a 1st grade level. Imagine not trusting yourself to give your children their medication because you are unable to read the medicine bottle. Imagine not being able to communicate with your child’s teacher. While these things may be hard for you to imagine, they are not hard for 24% of our fellow Fort Bend County residents to imagine.
Yes, 24% of Fort Bend County residents are functionally illiterate, and for over 26 years The Literacy Council of Fort Bend County has been changing lives of the functionally illiterate.
They would like to invite you to be a part of their efforts with the Gift of Literacy. Your gift will help support their six programs; basic literacy, English as a Second Language, basic computer skills, GED preparation, U.S. citizenship, and transitions to post-secondary education.
