Travis High School student, Avanthika Gopal, is all about action. She isn’t one to sit on the sidelines and watch things happen, but rather a natural-born leader who is working to make a difference.
Two years ago, Gopal started a Red Cross Club at her school. The idea came to her after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that left more than 283,000 people dead and destroyed homes and property in 11 Indian Ocean countries. Seeing news coverage following the disaster and learning about the Red Cross’ timely efforts to assist those in need motivated Gopal to take action in her own hometown.
With the assistance of Travis High School teachers, Gopal recruited nearly 50 students to form her school’s Red Cross Club. The group has since grown to 128 members who take part in food and clothing drives, as well as other efforts, to assist the homeless and other groups in need.
“There are a lot of people who need help, and sometimes we take things for granted,” said Gopal. “The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami really opened my eyes, and I am proud to join my schoolmates at Travis in making a positive difference in people’s lives.”
